Changing the way people shop, forever.

Welcome to our world.

The gossip.
The chat.
The insight.

More great news for Mark, as the Growing Business Awards have announced that he has reached the finals in the Entrepreneur of the Year category. These are always exciting awards, which Mark has been invited to attend in past years, and he even won their Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010.

The awards are being held at the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square in late November 2012. They are hosted by the CBI and Real Business magazine, and supported by Lloyds Bank.

This is the second awards that Mark has reached the finals for in recent weeks. When talking about being a finalist Mark said, “I always talk about awards being down to the team and none more so than those relating to business growth where success relies heavily on having a supportive and strong team around you, I cannot thank the team enough for all their hard work”.

Exciting times for Mark as he unleashed his new business, HushHush.com.

Here is the press release relating to the launch…

Mark Pearson, the founder of the UK’s most popular discount voucher code website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, has decided to pursue a passion of his and launch a design-orientated website that promises users huge savings on fashion, interiors, gardening and food and drink, with launch collections including the likes of Calvin Klein, Dolce and Gabbana and French Connection.

Pearson is launching www.HushHush.com having already had more than quarter of a million people sign up using the site’s placeholder signup page. Once signed up, the site has been offering users cash to use on the site as credit by referring friends.

The site will give users up to 75% off handpicked exclusive sales, showcasing popular brands and great designs for the home and wardrobe.

The success of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk led to the launch of more than a dozen international variants under Pearson’s company Markco Media, helping millions of people save hundreds of millions of pounds. Markco Media has built a database of more than 4.5 million discount-savvy members of public within the UK.

Using the discount platforms as a springboard, Markco Media is launching HushHush.com with a £1m budget, ensuring no expense is spared in terms of the products and team built to source them. The project has received no external funding.

The team, including buyers who bring a wealth of product-hunting experience, include professionals from the likes of Harrods, Net a Porter and the Arcadia Group.

Shoppers will find items from brands such as Calvin Klein, Dolce and Gabbana and French Connection forming part of the launch range. From festive decorations to designer gifts, the team has pulled out all the stops to deliver discounted collections from brands not traditionally associated with sales.

Mark Pearson, founder of HushHush.com had the following to say,

“Saving consumers money has always been a huge passion of mine and now I’m in a position to launch a site that delivers designer home and wardrobe collection savings, I’m very excited.

He continued,

“The team I’ve built and the money I’m putting into it has already started reaping rewards given the incredible number of signups we had, before so much as listed one product. To have so many people signed up and excited about the launch is very promising. We’re confident we’ll have the products to grow and keep consumers coming back.”

Markco Media are proud to announce a second round investment with unsold ticket discount website www.LastSecondTicket.co.uk.

Last Second Tickets was founded three years ago and will now become a member of the Markco Media family, led by founder and Chairman Mark Pearson. The Last Second Tickets team will continue to work out of Markco Media’s London office. The company employs 17 full time staff members and is looking to grow the team.

The company intends to use the investment to build its technology team to help scale the business by automating many of the processes, as well as spend on marketing.

Every year an estimated 50 million tickets for live events in the UK remain unsold.

Last Second Tickets is the only company specialising in the unsold tickets arena. The company saves consumers money by securing unsold tickets for all types of live events directly from promoters and venues in the days running up to events. The tickets are then sold either directly to the consumer via the website or as part of Last Second Ticket’s corporate service.

The loyalty scheme offered to corporate clients is the company’s biggest growth area, providing brands such as Tesco, Mercedes Benz and Philips with both off-the-shelf customer or employee loyalty programmes and white label offerings. Last Second Ticket recently won a two year exclusive contract to provide FunFinder, the new customer retention service for Orange.

Craig Massey, founder of Last Second Tickets said of the investment,

“I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but it really is only the tip of the iceberg. Our consumer offering is strong, providing great value tickets to site visitors, but our effort has to be in pushing further into customer and employee loyalty and with Mark and Markco Media’s further backing, I’m confident we can do so.

“To have an entrepreneur like Mark on your side is fantastic. I think I speak for the team when I say that we’re excited about the future of Last Second Ticket, which aims to become a leading global player in corporate loyalty schemes.”

Always on the hunt for the next new business venture Mark Pearson launched Markco Media’s Got Talent, the opportunity for all his staff to showcase off their investment ideas with one group getting the chance to develop their product.

The idea of the contest came from the remarkable success of Vouchacha (My Voucher Codes Mobile app) which was formed by Ben Brown and Julian Polzella over one weekend! The app has now gone on to be used by over 1 million customers per month.

The winners of Markco’s Got Talent will be given the opportunity to recreate this success given mentorship and financial backing by Mark.

After a full day of presentations, Mark chose his winner as Stamp.it an online loyalty card service designed by Martin Herd, our Social Media Executive.

The idea of Stamp.it is to get rid of all the clutter of retailer loyalty cards and make all your points go into one hub, easily storing our your data and thus making your discounts and savings easier!

After impressing Mark with his plans, Martin has now gone on to launch the company on his own and become the brands founder.

Congratulations to Martin and watch this space for Stamp.it

The first Hackathon London, organised by Markco Media, was a huge success as 130 people, made up of web developers, designers and entrepreneurs attended the weekend long event, along with a number of well know VC’s and respected business mentors.

The first ever Hackathon London, organised and hosted at Markco Media’s offices at Butler’s Wharf, has been heralded as a huge success. In total, 130 people took part, and several of the ideas pitched received interest from venture capital representatives that were in attendance.

Markco Media, a world-wide leader in voucher and discount code websites (including MyVoucherCodes.co.uk in the UK), hosted the event that was attended by web developers, designers and entrepreneurs, along with mentors including Mark Pearson from Markco Media, Nic Brisbourne from DFJ Esprit (VC), Ross Williams, Founder of Global Personals, Hugh Chappell (VC and Business Mentor) and Will Martin from Angel Investment Network.

Teams and individuals came along, including groups of students from the University of Canterbury and Aberystwyth University, and were given access to API’s from brands such as Peerindex, Vouchacha, SeatWave, Twilio, Pusher and Markco Media.

The teams pitched their initial ideas, which the mentors and judges then used to decide what projects would be taken forward. The projects were worked on throughout the weekend, with most attendees sleeping in the office, then pitching the finished projects to the VC and mentors.

The business that won the Best Potential prize, winning a three months mentorship from Mark Pearson, was CrowdPad (www.Crowdpad.co.uk) , BrowseGraph (www.browsegraph.com) and Pythea (@Pythiadev)

VouChaCha, the world’s leading multi-channel coupon and deals network, featuring online and in-store vouchers, was acquired by Markco Media in February 2012 in a deal worth £6m. VouChaCha technology powers the MyVoucherCodes.co.uk mobile Apps and has gone on to be used by over 1 million users per month.

VouChaCha was founded back in February 2009 with the aim of bringing the immediacy of the web to the High Street, enabling retailers and consumers to connect through the use of targeted discounts.

They are owned and operated by CEO Ben Brown and CTO Julian Polzella, along with a passionate group of technology and marketing professionals who are driven by getting return on investment for their customers.

Today, they believe the best way of providing targeted discounts as an integrated part of your marketing strategy, whilst also protecting your brand, is through the use of coupons, delivered directly to a user’s mobile phone based on their location. They provide a comprehensive service from coupon distribution through their partner applications to creating and managing your own, branded location based application.

Today at Markco Media we are celebrating the 5th birthday of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk. The banners and balloons are out and at 11.30 the whole team gathered around to tuck into the most enormous birthday cake.

Mark Pearson, the company Chairman and Founder, addressed the staff congratulating everyone on their contribution to the staggering success the company has seen is such a short time. He went on to say “The company continues to build on this success with many new projects underway and an optimistic international expansion programme”. Mark then invited Ashleigh Stevens to help him cut the cake as she is the longest serving member of staff.

Happy Birthday MyVoucherCodes and Markco Media.

Reception, Markco Media Ltd. The Clove Building

Last Monday saw Markco Media Ltd. move offices to a prime London location in order to facilitate rapid global expansion. The new offices close to Tower Bridge; a prime central location reflect the rapid expansion and financial success of the business. Located at Butler’s Wharf, the offices are a stone’s throw from Tower Bridge and close to London’s financial quarter.

The move has generated a much larger office space for Markco Media employees, in order to facilitate the increase in staff numbers. Following the huge success of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, launched in 2006; Markco Media has now expanded into new territories across the globe including the USA, German, France, Spain and Brazil to name a few; vowing to be active in a further 10 countries by the end of 2011.

The new office move will facilitate the recruitment of up to 100 new employees to the Markco Media Ltd business. The roles will mainly be in areas such as marketing, SEO and developers, mobile developers and management teams for each country.

The move comes following a successful year for Markco Media Ltd, with total turnover for 2010 exceeding £10 million. 2010 also saw Markco Media’s Chairman and Founder, Mark Pearson, named in The Sunday Times Rich List; with his own personal worth now exceeding £60 million. In November 2010, Mark Pearson also appeared as a Secret Millionaire on the popular Channel 4 series, donating £115,000 of his own money to causes around Nottingham.

The new offices in central London have been designed with employee welfare in mind, with plenty of relaxation space; as well as stimulating, brightly-coloured designs adorning the walls. Employees have plenty of space between desks making for a light and airy feel, whilst a designated relaxation area, complete with football table and bean bag area, provide plenty of space for employees to relax and have fun.

Mark Pearson, chairman of Markco Media Ltd, commented on the move:

“We’re extremely excited to have moved base to central London, and are very much looking forward to the new opportunities and expansion this can facilitate. We have enjoyed rapid expansion over the past 12 months, and with this in mind we felt the need to find offices that reflect our success accordingly; as well as giving us enough room to recruit up to 100 new staff for new projects to be able to take off.”

He continued:

“We hope that the location, close to the hub of London’s financial district, will place us deeper into the heart of financial matters within the UK; as well as attracting the high-calibre of employees that we’re on the lookout for. A great deal of attention to design and employee welfare had been put into the new building, and we can’t wait to realise the new opportunities that our new location will give us.”

a4uExpo Munich

I have just returned from an inspiring and thoroughly exhausting 3 days in Munich where Markco Media were exhibiting and sponsoring at a4uExpo Europe.
The members of our team that attended were Mark Pearson (Chairman), Salvatore Maiorano (International Marketing Manager), Cedrick Chantebel (Online Marketing Manager – CodesPromotion.fr), Natascha Kahmann (Online Marketing Manager – TopGutscheinCode.de) and Ben Brown (Director of Mobile at VouChaCha).

This was the first a4uExpo that I’ve attended and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. The delegate list was top notch and we certainly made some very promising contacts. Also the international teams were able to put names to many of the faces they have been working with, via email, for months. Put this against the backdrop of a packed schedule of top quality and entertaining presentations and the event proved a fantastic opportunity for us and certainly one for the calendar next year.

Mid morning on the first day our own Salvatore was sitting on the panel to discuss ‘The Future Of Vouchers and Group Buying In Performance Marketing’ with Kevin Edwards (Affiliate Window and Buy.at), Daniel Engelbarts (ECONA), Axel Hesse (GutscheinPony) and moderated by Matthew Wood from a4uexpo. There were some interesting points covered and a couple of tough questions elegantly handled and discussed by the experts.

Salvatore Maiorano on the panel at a4uExpo Europe

Salvatore Maiorano on the panel at a4uExpo Europe

Among the talks that I attended was a very interesting insight into the value of a fan and how to gain successful ROI through Facebook by Lee Griffin and Siebren Roorda from TBG Digital.

Ben Brown from VouChaCha (the Markco Media company responsible for our mobile apps) gave an interesting and educational talk covering the lessons learnt from being at the forefront of voucher/mobile/geo-targeting marketing.

The afternoon included an entertaining discussion on SEO trends and techniques with Dixon Jones (DixonJones.com & MajesticSEO), Gary Beal (Blueclaw Media Ltd), Alexander Holl (121Watt), Bob Rains & Marcus Tandler (Tandler.Doerje.Partner). The discussion dipped more than toe deep into the Panda update that Google recently made and how this had affected English speaking sites and might impact on those in the rest of Europe. There were some other great take-aways about the way Google has changed recently and how new features like Google +1 and how social is playing an ever increasing role in modern SEO. One question asked at the end was where Google would be in 5 years to which Dixon Jones (supported by the other panellists) answered “Number 2 [to Facebook]”.

Day two started unsurprisingly slowly after the networking party of the night before, but provided just as many great contacts and stimulating presentations as day one. The keynote talk was titled; Applying Behavioural Economics to Affiliate Marketing; “It’s easier to change behaviour than opinions” and was presented by Rory Sutherland of the Ogilvy Group. Rory explained how affiliate marketers have become experts in altering consumer behaviour, through often very small changes, often without being aware that is what they were doing.

After another fantastic lunch (tweeted by Bastian Grimm @basgr as the “Best conference lunch of the year!” and I have to agree) everyone was begining to feel slightly more human and you could feel the buzz around the expo hall.

Because of my interest in all things Search I attended the much anticipated ‘Panda – The Quality Bear of Search Eats Affiliates’ presentation by Dixon Jones (Majestic SEO) and Ralf Schwoebel (Tradebit). Dixon presented some interesting research done into analysing the winners and losers looking at as many possible factors for the differences. Great suggestions were put forward by Ralf on how they worked to reduce the impact of the update. The conclusions however was that there are ways to avoid being hit hard, there are ways to increase your conversion, there are ways to improve your link profile but there is no way to avoid the Panda.

The expo rounded off from about 4 in the afternoon and the Markco Media team were certainly feeling as if it had been a highly successful trip. Many thanks to Sarah Parsonage, Matt Wood and the rest of the a4u Team.

Natascha had this to say:
“It was very beneficial to attend and to meet personally with my contacts at Webgains, Affilinet, Commission Junction, Affilired, Peakpoint/Effiliation and Netaffiliation. It is always good to put a face to the person who you have been talking to over email to improve the relationship and the business. We’re looking forward to working even closer with them in the future.”

Mark commented:
“It’s always good to get all the right people together in one place at one time, you really can achieve so much. The people I spoke with were full of ideas and passionate about what they do and their particular area of performance marketing. I’m heading back to the office invigorated and looking forward to developing the contacts I made.”

Salvatore added:
“Although the event is predominantly European I think it is fast becoming a global conference. Some of the contacts I made were as far afield as Brazil and South Africa.”

Simone Vincent and Simon Blanchard presenting at 2011 EMEA Silverpop Customer Conference

Simone Vincent and Simon Blanchard presenting at 2011 EMEA Silverpop Customer Conference

Today I attended the EMEA Silverpop Customer Conference with our Melodie Laperdrix; the online marketing executive for our French website CodesPromotion.fr.

This inspiring event was held at The Brewery near Moorgate, London and was attended by over 250 of Silverpop’s EMEA customers. The opening presentation was given by Bill Nussey, Silverpop CEO, and Bryan Brown, Director of Product Strategy, and provided an overview of the company’s progress to date, and an introduction to their  latest products and features, and those that are in development.

Between Melodie and myself we attended many of the interesting and entertaining presentations focusing mainly in two key areas; Best Practices and Product & Training.

These were some very useful sessions providing insight into moving your marketing programme into the ‘mocial’ (Mobile, Social and Local) environment, considering creative design which is optimised for mobile devices, and integrating your social media presence more closely with your email marketing. A presentation on ‘Preference Centres’ confirmed development plans we already have under-way and that some of our development roadmap needs to be pursued more vigorously.

I presented to a 200+ strong audience along with Zoe Seaman – bmibaby and Simon Blanchard – Bauer Media. The focus of my presentation was to explain the way in which Silverpop features have benefited our email programme over the last year. I used examples such as ‘Send Time Optimisation’, ‘Programs’, ‘Automated Messages’, ‘Relational Tables’ and ‘Behavioural Tracking’ to demonstrate how the right mix can achieve results with examples in all cases. The case study examined the user journey from opt-in, to activation and engagement. I also covered the main thrust of our email strategy which is twice weekly newsletters and more recently ‘Discount Alerts’. Demonstrating how we engage with user through to retention and re-engagement I brought in our use of Best Practice as well as learning from split testing.

This was an extremely valuable event resulting in good exposure for us and an opportunity to network with key contacts. It is vital to maintain a good relationship with your ESP and events like this are great for exactly that.

Mark Pearson Secret Millionaire

For those of you that haven’t come across ‘The Secret Millionaire’ before, it is a reality TV show which originated in the UK. Millionaires conceal their wealth and enter into impoverished communities, where they will give away several thousand pounds to people who need and deserve helping. To make sure that members of the community remain unaware that their new resident is in fact a millionaire, they are told that the cameras are present due to filming a documentary.

Each programme, a millionaire leaves their luxurious life behind to take on a secret identity and live undercover in a deprived area of the country between 7 and 10 days. Surviving on a minimal budget and supplied with basic living conditions, they must interact within the community by working and volunteering alongside the locals. Their aim is to find individuals or projects in which they think deserve should receive a cut of their wealth. On their final day, the millionaire will reveal their true identity and their wealth to the people they have chosen to help, surprising them with thousands of pounds, along with future support to improve their lives.

Mark Pearson, a self made millionaire who is chairman and founder of Markco Media, the parent company of consumer website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk and Groupola.com, will star as this week’s Secret Millionaire on Sunday 7th November at 9pm on Channel 4. This Sunday’s show will see the young Merseyside entrepreneur, who is worth over £30m, travel to Nottingham to visit problem areas of the city.

Mark sheds his comfortable lifestyle to move into a rented house in the city, renowned as being one of the most violent areas in the region.

During his time in the city, Mark soon becomes involved with several charitable projects; including an organisation that works to help victims of domestic violence. He also discovers an anti-gun and knife campaign being run by Clayton Byfield in his spare time. Disguising himself as an unemployed chef looking for voluntary work, Mark joins Clayton at his youth groups and workshops to better understand the harsh realities of knife and gun crime. At the end of his stay, Mark donates £150,000 of his personal fortune to three individuals running charities.
